Goddess of the Lake, Landscape Painting, The Joker, 2024
Dimitrina Sevova
Sight-specific installation, sculptural ceramic objects, free-standing landscape painting on canvas, bags with water and pigments, found wooden sticks
kunst+bündig was an opportunity to test for the first time my new sculptural ceramic piece, the Goddess of the Lake, together with one of my large, free-standing landscape painting on canvas. There are other small ceramic objects, and the piece The Joker. Perhaps it will become the starting point for another installation and further development of ideas outlined in this one-day exhibition.
The main body of the Goddess is made of slabs, and the head is hand-built, both with GRX10 stoneware. The body is covered with slip of Ming porcelain into which I dipped ears of wheat collected from a nearby field. The whole work was an experiment, stressing the possibility of the material. The Goddess is inspired by a votive object located in the historical museum in Varna, dating back to the period between the stone age and iron age when a civilization flourished around a lake in the region, later vanishing due to climate, geographic and tectonic changes. The lake still exists but is underground, partly under the city of Varna. As a small child, I had fears around that underground lake. The work goes back to something archaic and earthly, but also unconscious. It expresses creativity coming from the depth of the surface, which is the fundamental moment of creation that Henri Matisse saw as the core of art. I was looking for something tribal, ritualistic, between votiveness and devotion, with the character of clay as a material. You can find more information on how the painting was made @dimitrina_studio. I found the wooden sticks in the installation in the forest. The plastic bags with pigments refer to elements and minerals, but also to the primary state of colors and their purity before being mixed and applied to the surface.
