Samodiva – Wild Reclaiming Space is based on Dimitrina Sevova’s fieldwork in the ruins of the former women’s ward of the Ospedale psichiatrico di Volterra, now overgrown and reclaimed by nature, and reflects her long-standing interest in the interconnectedness of body, mind, society, environment, and ecology.
Starting from the history of psychiatry, the project examines the construction of hysteria in the context of the rise of modern institutions and the social and economic transformations of early industrial capitalism. In the 18th and 19th centuries, psychiatric institutions served not only for care but also for the definition and regulation of deviance—women whose bodies, knowledge, or life rhythms challenged prevailing norms were often stigmatized. The exhibition draws on feminist theories, including those of Silvia Federici, and is inspired by Félix Guattari’s ecological thinking. It views hysteria less as a fixed medical diagnosis and more as a cultural narrative shaped by projection, discipline, and shifting value systems.
The title refers to the Samodiva, a figure from Bulgarian folklore associated with forests, healing, and the ambivalent forces of nature, serving as a counterpoint to the pathologized woman. In paintings, sculptures, and other works, the artist experiments with earth, minerals, and organic elements as transformative and symbolic forces.
Pigments mixed with soil, wildflowers embedded into painted surfaces, and pyrite added to clay create subtle variations in texture and luster. These materials suggest states of transition and hybridity, while their forms draw on tropes from literature, art history, and mythology, serving as pathways into a holistic, animate cosmos.
Through these material and conceptual explorations, the project interweaves institutional memory, ecological processes, and symbolic imagination. Decay and transformation become quiet metaphors for resilience and renewal, and the exhibition thus opens a space inviting a reconsideration of care, memory, and resistance.
Samodiva – Wild Reclaiming Space basiert auf Dimitrina Sevovas Feldforschung in den Ruinen der ehemaligen Frauenstation des Ospedale psichiatrico di Volterra, die heute überwuchert und von der Natur zurückerobert sind, und spiegelt ihr langjähriges Interesse an der Verbundenheit von Körper, Geist, Gesellschaft, Umwelt und Ökologie wider.
Ausgehend von der Geschichte der Psychiatrie untersucht das Projekt die Konstruktion der Hysterie im Kontext des Aufkommens moderner Institutionen und der sozialen und wirtschaftlichen Umwälzungen des frühen industriellen Kapitalismus. Im 18. und 19. Jahrhundert dienten psychiatrische Einrichtungen nicht nur der Versorgung, sondern auch der Definition und Regulierung von Abweichungen – Frauen, deren Körper, Wissen oder Lebensrhythmen die vorherrschenden Normen in Frage stellten, wurden oft stigmatisiert. Die Ausstellung stützt sich auf feministische Theorien, darunter jene von Silvia Federici, und ist von Félix Guattaris ökologischem Denken inspiriert. Sie betrachtet Hysterie weniger als eine feststehende medizinische Diagnose, sondern vielmehr als ein kulturelles Narrativ, das durch Projektion, Disziplin und sich wandelnde Wertesysteme geprägt ist.
Der Titel bezieht sich auf die Samodiva, eine Figur aus der bulgarischen Folklore, die mit Wäldern, Heilung und den ambivalenten Kräften der Natur in Verbindung gebracht wird und als Gegenpol zur pathologisierten Frau fungiert. In Gemälden, Skulpturen und anderen Werken experimentiert die Künstlerin mit Erde, Mineralien und organischen Elementen als transformative und symbolische Kräfte.
Mit Erde vermischte Pigmente, in bemalte Oberflächen eingebettete Wildblumen und dem Ton beigemischter Pyrit sorgen für subtile Variationen in Textur und Glanz. Diese Materialien deuten auf Zustände des Übergangs und der Hybridität hin, während ihre Formen auf Motive aus Literatur, Kunstgeschichte und Mythologie zurückgreifen und als Zugänge zu einem ganzheitlichen, lebendigen Kosmos dienen.
Durch diese materiellen und konzeptuellen Erkundungen verwebt das Projekt institutionelles Gedächtnis, ökologische Prozesse und symbolische Vorstellungskraft miteinander. Verfall und Wandel werden zu stillen Metaphern für Widerstandsfähigkeit und Erneuerung, und die Ausstellung eröffnet so einen Raum, der dazu einlädt, die Themen Fürsorge, Erinnerung und Widerstand neu zu überdenken.
